from sepia ink to tik tok: transnational movement of personal songs

vanessaelbaz5

Jewish Music has traveled in personal songbooks for centuries. Today, Facebook and Tiktok pages appear as the “notational” device for traditional or new composed pieces from a worldwide diaspora which originated in small port cities . The economic networks between Morocco, Gibraltar, Cairo, Madrid, Paris, London and Mexico City are some of the hubs in which the performance of these repertoires continues to appear, be transmitted and transform. The mobility of repertoires can be seen using two case studies, one from the late 19th century, which brought Tetuan, Gibraltar and Cairo together through a young man’s songbook and through a contemporary case of newly composed songs in Moroccan Judeo-Spanish written by a 50-year-old woman from Tetuan currently

living in Mexico City and disseminating her music through Facebook and Tiktok. Does the difference between medium, gender, age, economic situation and temporality have similar or different consequences on the underlying mechanisms of transmission, creativity and mobility?
